Day 3: Fairytale Castles
- A
day to discover fairytale castles. Firstly we visit the village of
Hohenschwangau and King Ludwig’s famous castle Neuschwanstein. Built
in the 19th century, this fairytale castle is dramatically perched
on a hilltop with panoramic views over the countryside and the Royal
castle of Hohenschwangau. (Please note at Neuschwanstein there is a
degree of walking involved as well as a considerable number of steps
to climb... King Ludwig loved his privacy!) In the afternoon we
drive along the Graswang valley to visit the beautiful castle
Linderhof, modelled on the Petit Trianon at Versailles and lavishly
decorated with mirrors, painted ceilings and gilded cherubs in a
mixture of Renaissance and Baroque styles.

Day 4: Innsbruck -
We travel east to Innsbruck, ‘capital’ of the Tirol. Set with a
backdrop of soaring Alpine mountains and fine regal buildings, it is
a major winter sports city, having hosted the winter Olympics. We
visit the internationally renowned Ski jump, Berg Isel, where you
can marvel at the bravery and courage of the jumpers- it’s even more
frightening than it appears on TV! The Golden Roof is testimony to
the time in the 15th century when Innsbruck was at the centre of
European culture and politics when Emperor Maximilian 1 based his
Imperial Court here. Today you can enjoy its relaxing squares and
vibrant shopping streets.
